Leaning and speaking a foreign language is like dancing–you’ll get rusty if you stop doing it. You will never perfect the Spanish verb conjugations you keep mixing up if you do not use the language! This is where language exchange groups and meetups can help you. There are a lot of language exchanges in Medellin that will help you practice your Spanish and meet new people while enjoying good food and drinks. Here are the ones highly recommended by our fellow expats:
Dimeli hosts regular language exchange programs every Tuesdays and Fridays, 7 pm. Practice your Spanish through fun games in a place with a relaxed vibe. They have special offers for beer and mojito during language exchange nights, too!
This Meetup group meets every two weeks on Wednesdays, at 7 pm at Vintrash Bar. They prepare games to help break the ice and get you talking. After the two-hour language exchange, you can join the international party where you can dance and enjoy drinks. Hopefully, you can apply any new phrases you learned right away! This language exchange is open to learners of different levels, including beginners. You can check out their upcoming language exchange events here.
This language academy in Medellin offers an “Olsa-Style” language exchange on Wednesdays, 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Each meeting has a different theme such as sports, summer, karaoke night, salsa night to name a few. There’s a restaurant in the academy in case you get hungry after a competitive language game. You can check out their upcoming language exchange events here.

Toucan Language Center organizes language exchange meetup three times a week–Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. They have a minimum purchase of 5,000 COP, but that’s still much less compared to paying for a Spanish teacher! You can join their group here.
Watching soccer games is not the only thing you will enjoy in this bar. In partnership with Keep Talking, they offer free language exchange in Medellin every Wednesday at 7 pm. The structure of their language exchange ensures that both languages will be practiced. They also prepare guided games like charades, trivia games, among others. Check out their Facebook page here.

If you are more comfortable practicing Spanish one to one, you can try looking for a language exchange partner from this group. Want to practice a language other than Spanish? There are other foreign language speakers that can practice with you. You can join their group here.
Language exchange has been more than just a place for practicing a new language. It has become an avenue to meet new friends and like-minded people that we end up meeting outside of the weekly language events. What’s your most memorable experience with language exchange events in Medellin? We’d love to hear in the comments!
